Illini Shine on Day Four of Car-X Futures of Champaign


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Play continued at the 2016 Car-X Futures on Tuesday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center. All six current and former Illini advanced in either the singles or doubles main draw.


Aron Hiltzik and Jared Hiltzik each advanced in the singles and doubles draw on Tuesday afternoon. Aron was first off the court with a 7-5, 6-4 win over qualifier, Julian Bradley of Ireland. Jared then went on to upset the No. 6-seeded Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador in a dominating comeback victory, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. Along with the Hiltzik brothers, junior Aleks Vukic will also continue play in the singles main draw on Wednesday morning.


In doubles, five of the Illini doubles players advanced in the main draw. Tim Kopinski and Alex Lawson defeated Gonzales Austin and Ryan Shane, 6-4, 6-2. Dennis Nevolo and Chad Rhodan defeated Jack and Jamie Vance, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Jared Hiltzik and Dominik Koepfer used a third set tiebreaker to defeat Hunter Callahan and Michael Zhu, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6. Aron Hiltzik and incoming freshman Noe Khlif teamed up for their first victory as a doubles pair by defeating Felix Corwin and Sameer Kumar, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.


The brothers Aron and Jared will face off tomorrow morning in the singles main draw.


Tennys Sandgren, USA, came into the Car-X Futures Tournament as the top-ranked player entered into the draw. Sandgren is currently ranked No. 289 in singles. The former University of Tennessee Volunteer has already won two singles titles on the Illinois Swing at the USA F25 Future in Edwardsville and the USA F24 Future in Godfrey. Sandgren defeated Nathan Pasha, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round to advance in the singles draw.


The Car-X Futures of Champaign is the final tournament leg of the “Illinois Swing” that includes four tournaments in a row in the state of Illinois-Godfrey, Edwardsville, Decatur and Champaign.


The main draw will continue tomorrow morning, August 10, at the Atkins Tennis Center, beginning at 9 a.m. CT.


Main Draw Wild Cards Awarded for Car-X Futures of Champaign

Aron Hiltzik, Tim Kopinski, Strong Kirchheimer and Jeffrey Schorsch were each awarded wild card entry into the Car-X Futures of Champaign singles main draw. Hiltzik just completed his third year of athletic eligibility at the University of Illinois. The Wilmette, Ill. native recently played in the USA F26 Futures in Decatur where he competed in both singles and doubles. Kopinski served as the Fighting Illini Volunteer Assistant Coach during the 2015-16 season after completing his athletic eligibility in the spring of 2015. Kopinski was a three-time All-Big Ten selection. Kirchheimer is a two-time All-Big Ten selection and enters his senior year at Northwestern University. The Cary, N.C. native reached the singles round of 16 at the USA F26 Futures in Decatur last week. Schorsch competed in his first ITF Pro Circuit event at the USA F26 Futures where he reached the singles round of 16. The Valparaiso rising senior earned his second straight Horizon League Player of the Year Honor in April after amassing 29 singles victories last season. Kopinski, Kirchheimer and Schorsch will begin main draw singles play on Monday morning at 11:30 CT with Hiltzik set to begin main draw play on Tuesday morning.
